A fungal skin infection is caused by a fungus on the body that lives on keratin, which is the protein that makes up the skin, nails and hair. It can be caused by antibiotics, steroids, being overweight, having diabetes or a weakened immune system. The many types include Athlete’s foot, ringworm of the body, groin or scalp, and yeast infections such as thrush and intertrigo.

Damage by way of cuts or scrapes can also encourage fungi to grow. As the infection is generally contagious, it is important not to put others at risk of catching it; do not share towels, clothes, hairbrushes or combs.

The symptoms of a fungal skin infection may be red, scaly, irritated patches. The appearance of the symptoms and the level of pain and discomfort differ between sufferers.
