Just What Is A Calorie?
May 11, 2011 Weight Management
Calories are what your body uses as fuel just like a car needs gas to run. If you think about it, it’s not too farfetched to think of calories as “gas” for the body. Calories are the source of energy that our bodies use to drive our hearts, lungs and every single physiological function that makes us alive.
All of the calories we get come from the food we eat but our bodies don’t simply take that steak you just ate and throw it into some sort of biological furnace for energy. First, it must extract the nutrients in the food you eat and break them down into their most elemental form, a substance called glucose. If your body doesn’t require the energy right away the calories get stored as body fat for later use.
Most people don’t realize that for every 3,500 calories that your body doesn’t need and stores for later use equals one pound of body fat. You can only lose that fat by creating a calorie deficit. That is, either you eat fewer calories than you burn in a day or you burn more calories than you eat which is why exercising will help you to lose weight.
Many people take dietary supplements to aid in their weight loss and one up-and-coming supplement is the Maqui Berry which is rated as the highest antioxidant fruit known to man. If you plan on adding Maqui to your diet you should read a Maqui review to learn about the different brands and strengths available to you.
