Beauty May Be Consoling Or Thought Provoking

Beauty obviously may be consoling to some, disturbing or sacred to others or profane; it can be exhilarating, appealing, inspiring, chilling to many. It can affect us in an variety of unlimited ways. Yet beauty it is never viewed with indifference. Actually beauty means something distinct to each of us and we must ask ourselves what makes an object–either in art, nature, or the human form–beautiful, and really after examining how we can compare varying judgments of beauty when it is evident to each and everyone all around us that our tastes vary so widely. It is therefore a right to be judgmental about beauty and what it means to each of us. Is it our right to say there is more beauty in a classical temple than a concrete office block, or more beauty in a Rembrandt than beauty in an Andy Warhol Campbell Soup Can? We all have a right be forthright and thought-provoking about beauty.
